Black Rock Mountain Bike Association (BRMBA) is the steward for the Black Rock Mountain Bike Trail system.
Black Rock is a world-class mountain biking destination carved into the Coast Range near Falls City, OR, known for its freeride trails and iconic “huck it or go home” features. It is located on a parcel of State Forest Land managed by the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF).
In 2002, through a unique collaboration between BRMBA and ODF, it became the first ODF approved “mountain bikes only” trail system on Oregon State Forest Land. This groundbreaking partnership became a model for other mountain bike communities seeking to establish similar collaborations with their land managers and state agencies.
Our Mission
BRMBA is dedicated to sustaining and enhancing the Black Rock Mountain Bike Trail network in close coordination with ODF. Our secondary goal is providing education about, advocacy for, and progression of the sport of mountain biking.
What We Do
BUILD TRAILS
Together with our dedicated volunteers led by trail managers, and in tandem with ODF, we design, build and maintain Black Rock’s free ride and downhill trails and related infrastructure.
Our Black Rock Trail Management Plan details the working arrangement and build standards/specifications set forth in our “Adopt-A-Trail” agreement with ODF. This plan follows these guidelines: minimize liability, maximize safety, reduce user conflict and improve communications and partnerships.
ADVOCATE FOR OUR TRAILS
We work closely with ODF and our local community.
ORGANIZE EVENTS TO FUND OUR WORK AND TO BUILD COMMUNITY
We host trail work days, shuttle events and fundraisers as well as events that build community such as trailbuilder campouts, Open House and our Anniversary Celebration.
Our Story:
A Trailblazing Partnership
Our roots began in 2002 when a local group of mountain bikers formed the Blackrock Freeride Association (BFA).
They sought ODF’s permission to build a freeride trail with man-made technical features within the boundary of George T. Gerlinger State Experimental Forest on Mt. Brown. ODF granted preliminary approval for work on a trail (now known as Sickter Gnar) to allow BFA to showcase their vision for technical trail features such as log rides, raised wooden structures for drops, and stump jumps.
Some structures did not pass muster due to ODF’s liability concerns. However, they agreed to allow more trails provided the builders develop trailbuilding standards subject to ODF approval. BFA also had to sign an Adopt-a-Trail agreement for volunteer work with ODF for each trail. ODF then designated these trails “mountain bike only.”
In 2006, BFA was renamed Black Rock Mountain Bike Association (BRMBA) to help frame the organization better not only within the mountain bike community but also to public, state, and federal agencies. It filed Articles of Incorporation with the State of Oregon and became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
In 2010, Black Rock had the honor of being selected as IMBA’s Epic Trail of the year for the PNW region for having “the biggest influence on riders, as well as land managers and decision makers.”

Our board members are all volunteers. We are responsible for maintaining Black Rock’s day-to-day operations, both on and off the trail, as well as planning for the future of the organization and Black Rock.
